Predicting the progression of autoimmune disorders – insights into Graves’ Disease

In this video, Dr. S.M. Hossein Sadrzadeh, clinical professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Calgary and section chief of clinical biochemistry for Alberta Public Laboratory, discusses his current work developing markers for Graves' disease; the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the USA, and predominantly affecting women. Sadrzadeh covers the development of this disease, including the role antibodies play in activating thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptors and leading to hyperthyroidism, the impact this has on patients, and the current treatments available. Using the latest technologies and assays to detect Graves’ disease, Sadrzadeh describes what his lab hopes to achieve in order to better predict patient remission and prognosis in the future.
