Numerous chemicals that are released into the environment after waste water treatment may have endocrine disrupting effects, potentially causing reproductive damage to Humans and other organisms. Accurately identifying these compounds allows them to be traced back to ingredients in consumer products so guidance can be given to manufacturers about the environmental damage of certain ingredients.

Professor Young’s research centers on physical-chemical processes important in treating contaminated water, groundwater, soil, and controlling the fate and transport of contaminants in the environment. He has a strong interest in the application of engineering to environmental policy-making, having obtained a master’s degree in public policy, a Ph.D. in environmental engineering and worked as a regulator for the US Environmental Protection Agency prior to joining the UCD faculty.
